O Corpo de Bombeiros Militar de Garuva foi acionado por volta das 17h15 dessa segunda-feira, dia 12 de abril, para o atendimento de uma ocorrência de incêndio em uma carreta nas proximidades do km 678 da BR-376, nas proximidades da divisa entre os estados do Paraná e Santa Catarina. O veículo se encontrava no sentido Joinville da pista, próximo a um retorno para o sentido Curitiba (PR).

A carreta do tipo baú estava fechada e em chamas, com os dois rodados pegando fogo e o incêndio se alastrando para parte da carga, com materiais plásticos (garrafas descartáveis de refrigerante). As chamas alcançavam cerca de cinco metros de altura. Cerca de quatro mil litros de água goram necessários para combater o fogo.

Ao verificar não haver mais riscos, o caminhão ficou sob os cuidados da concessionária responsável pela via juntamente com o motorista, que nada sofreu. Eles permaneceram no local, aguardando a chegada da seguradora para perícia.

Mais da metade da carga foi tomada pelas chamas e populares saquearam o restante, sendo que os bombeiros visualizaram várias pessoas indo em direção ao caminhão e, inclusive, lançando pedras contra a guarnição que combatia o incêndio. Populares armados com facão chegaram a tentar impedir o trabalho dos bombeiros.
