Nesse domingo, dia 26 de outubro, o CBM (Corpo de Bombeiros Militar) de Itapoá havia sido acionado para auxiliar um animal raro que se encontrava na orla da praia do balneário Itapoá, nas proximidades do Conselho Tutelar da Cidade. Chegando ao local, os bombeiros constataram se tratar de um peixe-lua, o maior peixe ósseo conhecido, que pode atingir até 3 metros e pesar cerca de 2,3 mil kg. Devido as grandes dimensões de sua barbatana dorsal, esse peixe pode ser confundido com tubarão quando observado da superfície. Populares já tentavam ajudar o peixe a passar a arrebentação das ondas para voltar ao mar, visto que ele estava muito debilitado. Um dos bombeiros entrou na água para ajudar no resgate, o que demorou 50 minutos.

Na manhã dessa segunda-feira, dia 27 de outubro, o peixe-lua reapareceu na praia, próximo à pista de skate. Infelizmente, dessa vez, já se encontrava morto.

Durante a tarde, a equipe do Projeto Toninhas se deslocou de São Francisco do Sul para recolhê-lo e estuda-lo ali mesmo na orla.

Devido ao grande peso do animal, ele permaneceu na praia até ser enterrado pela Secretaria Municipal de Obras e Serviços Públicos de Itapoá.
