Na tarde deste domingo, dia 25 de agosto, a Câmara de Vereadores de Itapoá realizou uma eleição indireta para definir quem assume a Prefeitura local até o próximo dia 31 de dezembro (2024). Com o voto de cinco entre os nove vereadores, Jonecir Soares (PL) foi eleito para seguir na função que já vinha desempenhando desde o último dia 18 de agosto. Também até o final deste ano de 2024, o vice-prefeito (eleito junto com Jonecir Soares) será Luiz Nego (Cidadnia).

O cargo de prefeito municipal havia ficado vago após o TSE (Tribunal Superior Eleitoral) determinar a cassação do, até então, prefeito, Jeferson Garcia (MDB) e exigir a realização de uma nova eleição, de forma indireta, para a ocupação do cargo até o final deste ano de 2024. A decisão dos ministros do TSE se deu pela maioria dos votos (5 a 2). Com o resultado, Jeferson Garcia perde o cargo em função da chapa vencedora na última eleição municipal (2020) ter sido condenada por abuso de poder político e econômico. Na ocasião, Jeferson foi eleito como vice-prefeito de Marlon Neuber (PL), também atingido pela decisão do TSE, mas que já havia renunciado ao cargo de prefeito em 2023 após ser preso por corrupção na Operação Mensageiro.

Todavia, enquanto Marlon Neuber ficou inelegível, Jeferson Garcia não perdeu seus direitos políticos e segue na disputa para à reeleição dia 06 de outubro, quando concorre com outros dois candidatos: Ana Valente (PT) e Tiago de Oliveira (PL).

Cinco chapas disputaram o pleito indireto definido pela Câmara Municipal. A chapa 01, de Jonecir e Luiz Nego, como dito, foi eleita com cinco votos. A chapa 02, com Lindonor (MDB) para prefeito e Conrado (MDB) para vice, ficou em segunda com dois votos. Em terceiro, com um voto, ficou a chapa 04: Eduardo (PSD) para prefeito e Karen (PSD) para vice. As chapas 03 (Rogério e Kaminski, ambos do Podemos) e 05 (Elaine e Lena do Aldo, ambas do PSB) não obtiveram nenhum voto.
